A replaced image shows up at its URL within minutes

When Update Image replaces an image with a new upload_source_url of the same type, the image's url and its thumbnail URLs now serve the new file within a few minutes. Before this, the URL stayed the same but our CDN kept serving the old picture from its cache for up to six months, so live pages and sent emails went on showing the old version.

Nothing changes in the request, and the url stays the same. Browsers that loaded the image before the replace can keep their own copy until it expires.
